From the Manufacturer
Presenting the Hellraiser C-1 from Schecter Guitar Research
Raise a Little Hell
Schecter's Hellraiser C-1 lives up to its name. Not just because of its fiery red quilted maple top, but its screaming hot EMG active pickups, set mahogany neck, gothic cross inlays, and plenty more--perfect for veteran shredders and those about to rock.
Features:
The Hellraiser C-1 features a mahogany body to provide smooth, detailed sound. The quilted maple top adds a little more punch to the sound, and more than a little punch to the guitar's looks--it's a real knockout paired with the devilish transparent red finish and abalone binding.
Schecter Locking Tuners feature a locking screw pin to lock the string into place for greater tuning stability. Details include a 19:1 gear ratio allowing for precise fine tuning adjustments, removable knobs, threaded peghead bushing, and a 10mm diameter peg hole.
The most common fretboard, Rosewood is naturally oily, and works well for any surface that sees frequent human contact. The sound is richer in fundamental than Maple because the stray overtones are absorbed into the oily pores.
81TX: Dual-mode design allows for maximum flexibility, with the original 81 providing all the crunch and aggressiveness it's famous for and an all new single-coil that features a fatter tone with plenty of punch and clarity. Neck: The EMG 89 is loaded with alnico V magnets and has separate preamps each providing custom outputs for dual coil and single coil modes (R Version use REAR coil ). In dual coil mode, the sound is rich, warm and powerful, but still very clear and is similar to the 85.
Made with 3 pieces of mahogany for extra stability. 3 piece necks can withstand the test of time. Where standard necks may show aging defects from temperature and moisture changes throughout the years, the 3 piece neck will stay nice and straight for a lifetime of playability.
(View larger)TonePros TOM w/Thru Body Bridge
TonePros components complete your instrument! Your bridge and tailpiece will be locked down and will not move or "wiggle" at all. With this design, even play or movement in the threads is reduced so that when you adjust your action and intonation, it is set and solid. Which improves your sustain and tonal qualities, makes harmonics "jump" out of your guitar, and more stable tuning.

But this guitar delivers with sound. I can get a full range of cleans, blues, rock and metal. All humbuckers should allow splitting that sounds as good as this. I know some reviews indicate that Metal sounds may not be the best, but I get what I need from this guitar. The sustain and harmonics are better than most (much more expensive) models.
I play this through a Peavey 100 watt tube half stack. I have an LP Custom with PAFs, an original composite Steinberger with the Steve Vai GEM set, Line 6 Variax 700 and a mexican Strat. The clean organic harmonic chord sounds of the LP can't be beat, but the sustain and overdrive pale in comparison to the Schecter. The Steinberger punches out the metal and harmonics a little better, but doesn't have quite the sweet mid frequency variety of sounds of the C-1.
I use all 3 guitars for composing and recording original songs in my studio. The Hellraiser is ideal for live playing (wide variety of sounds-don't need to use a second guitar)and excels when I need to run through chord/lead ideas for songs that I am composing. I turn on the recorder and play for hours. But the bonus is when it is time for mix-down. This Schecter fits in and cuts through the mix. Some guitars and pickups are too muddy or too thin when mixed, but I can easily get the C-1 to 'fit'.
Bottom Line-If I could only have one guitar for live shows, creating songs, and studio work, this would be the one. I have a list of all the items that I want in a guitar and this Schecter has them all in an attractive and extremely affordable package.

My biggest problem comes from the same use: detuning. I swapped out the stock strings it came with for Ernie Balls with a .62 base string up to a .12 high string because I want to use this guitar for hard rock and metal exclusively. The 25.5" fret length should allow for that fairly reliably - I see people using LTD guitars with a 24.75" neck length that handle it fine. Sure, you can detune this guitar but there are a couple major problems that immediately kick in:
1. Moving out of standard tuning immediately puts your strings at risk for dislodging themselves on the bridge. I've "rocked out" and played a guitar like this exactly how any guitarist would that wants to crank it up, and the base string often comes out of its bridge position and it gets stuck off the edge of the bridge cradle. Not OK. The typical A string has done this too. I've noticed it's less of an issue with lighter gauge strings and standard tuning but my Fender Strat can handle some detuning just fine and has never once had this issue. Problem is, my Fender Strat is a 3 single-coil pickup and isn't really meant for this kind of style. The Hellraiser is billed to be more in the lane I'm trying to use it for.
2. Larger strings don't sit well on the nut - my .62 string currently rests on top of the groove for the nut instead of within it, and the tuning pegs barely fit the string. You cannot fit a .80 in this guitar, period. If it was a squeeze to get a .62 in it I doubt you can go much larger and that's a bummer.
I am submitted for a return, reluctantly, and will be seeking another axe for my needs. I really want to love this guitar and think Schecter should address these small issues. I would consider keeping it if these weren't problems. Just about everything else is solid.
Humbucker/Single-Coil switching allows for some fine tonal subtleties, although you can't expect
the single-coil mode to sound bright-crisp as others would. Nevertheless, this axe can be played without any DSP yielding very good tone, which renders it versatile enough to play a variety of genres.
Finnish is top-notch with ubiquitous attention to detail. Shape is beautiful. Color is striking.
For all these qualities I've received compliments from bandmates and our guitar techie.
This buy is spot-on.

1) I went with Schecter because I listen to, and want to play, a lot of rock and metal. However, let's be honest: there is a ridiculous amount of misleading marketing surrounding guitars. Most guitars, especially for beginners, can be used to play a variety of genres with a proper set up. I decided on the Hellraiser mostly because of it's excellent reputation. It's commonly regarded as one of the best guitars for rock/metal at a great price point. At first I was going to pick up an Omen-6 Extreme FR. In fact, I was about to order the Omen when this guitar went on sale on Amazon for a great price, so I switched last minute. I would have ordered the Omen if this wasn't on sale at the time. In the end, I'm glad I opted for this guitar as it was the one I REALLY wanted (I likely would have replaced the Omen with a Hellraiser after a few years). It has several benefits over the Omen, including active pickups. I don't know if there is a difference in build quality. In the end, I'm glad I got a guitar without a the Floyd Rose, as that would have been overwhelming as a new player. For those new to guitar: FRs can be a bit finicky, strings are harder to change, and they don't stay in tune for as long. This is fine for an experienced player, but as someone getting into guitar I just want to make it as easy as possible to play every day. This sits by my desk at home and just calls out to be played and I don't need to mess around before starting.
2) Although it's an unfair comparison (~$1200 Hellraiser C-1 vs $300 Epiphone Les Paul), I'm going to make it anyway, as many are likely familiar with this Les Paul. First and foremost, you can tell the Hellraiser is a much more expensive guitar just by inspection. Holy, is it ever build well! Everything feels very sturdy, nothing is loose, and it looks like someone put a heck of a lot of time and effort into crafting it. Conversely, the Les Paul looks like it was stamped out by a machine and hastily screwed together. The neck is very similar in feel to the Les Paul, with the exception of the fret wire sizes. I find that the X-jumbo fret wires on the Schecter make it easier to switch frets without looking down at the guitar. Now, I'm a new player and I play a lot, so this could simply be due to me improving as a player. The string knobs on the Les Paul feel awkward, in that sometimes there is a delay between twisting and the string tightening/loosening; nothing like that on the Hellraiser. The Schecter has active pickups, which I like, but I'm not developed enough as a player to really tell the difference from passive pickups. Note to new guitar players: the active pickups require a battery to be powered. It's a lot easier to comfortably reach the frets closest to the pickups on the Schecter thanks to the shape of the body and one-piece body. The Les Paul is very bulky where the neck connects to the body, and hampers hand movement a bit.
3) As mentioned in point 2, the build quality is amazing. I have a hard time imagining a better quality feel/look - yes, there are more expensive guitars, but how much of that is due to brand name or marketing (ie, artist collaborations)? When I received the guitar, I spent quite a bit of time just admiring it, comparing it to the Les Paul, and showing it off to my wife (who really didn't care). I really like the sound too, but am hesitant to comment too much on this since I am so new to guitar. Just know that you can get a variety of tones by switching between front and back pickups, in combination with the push-pull knobs. Don't be fooled by people saying this is only for rock/metal - it's much more versatile.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase. I will not need another guitar in the future, until I get better and replace this for another Hellraiser C-1, but with a Floyd Rose.
Some say what is the most important to get that crunchy tone is the amps, but this guitar can make a bad amp sound way better! EMG active pickup!
S
just shred it ;)
Was worried about having it shipped across the country but it was just fine.
