An all-mahogany FG. Using mahogany for the body binding as well gives this model a warm, woody design to match the distinctive richness in the middle frequencies.

    From the manufacturer

    50 Years of History

The history of Yamaha‘s FG series started in 1966 with the release of the FG180 and FG150. Over the 50 years since its introduction, we have developed and produced several generations of FG - all of which have made FG the ideal acoustic for contemporary players. In all, there have been over 200 FG models since 1966.

    The YAMAHA FG/FS 800 Series

When it was introduced in 1966, the Yamaha FG proved that a great acoustic guitar didn’t need to cost a fortune. With a focus on great playability, musical tone and outstanding build quality, the original FG180 quickly became a classic with countless careers and hit records starting life on an FG. 50 years since the introduction of the FG acoustics, the new range features the best-ever FG tone and the same great playability and class-leading quality that’s made it the choice of millions of guitarists.

The 800 Series has a louder and stronger sound in the low to mid-ranges, thanks to cutting-edge acoustic analysis technology developed by the Yamaha R&D Division. Yamaha’s engineers have achieved this sound by utilizing analysis and simulation to arrive at the best bracing design without depending on tradition.

    Newly Developed Scalloped Bracing

The 800 Series features a new scalloped bracing pattern; an ideal acoustic structure that maintains the durability of the top board, while bringing out more of the natural sound of the instrument.

    The Power of Choice

2 body shapes, including an all-new FS concert size; 5 grades featuring different tonewood options; a myriad of color options; acoustic or electric-acoustic models. Whatever the personality of your music, there’s an FG to match.

    Made in Yamaha

Every aspect is crafted to make a better guitar. From painstakingly cured and dried woods to beautiful hand-sprayed finishes and detailed quality control, each and every FG is made to be a lifelong partner.

Probably the most open sounding mahogany guitar in the world that is a really nice and mellow allrounder

Probably the most open sounding mahogany guitar in the world that is a really nice and mellow allrounder
In the last few months I changed my focus of only playing electric guitar to playing acoustic at least as much and in the process I realigned my guitar collection. The only acoustic I had was a nicely opened up and great sounding Yamaha FG700.I sold three electrics and the FG700 and replaced them with a Yamaha FG800 (for my son) an FS850, a Maton SRS60, and a Maton Mini for myself. This gave me three guitars that could cover a broad tonal range. The scalloped bracing on the 800 series is amazing and brand new my son's FG800 it sounds about as opened up as the FG700 did but with a more rounded tone with more even bass, mids and treble. This same new bracing has made the FS850 a really amazing sounding mahogany. Some time ago I used to own a Sigma 00015M that I really loved. It had the typical mahogany sound which is hard to put into words but basically the soundboard sounds like it is damped like the bottom has been painted with a layer of tar. The sounds of the strings were kind of isolated and the sound of the top board was very much reduced. As a consequence its balance of frequencies is very different from the typical spruce top guitar. Some frequencies seem like they are totally missing and others are accentuated. They sound great for finger picking because the sound comes out cleaner with subdued overtones. Strumming sounds flatter with less bass and more mids.I liked the Sigma and enjoyed how it sounded different to any other acoustic. (I might even buy it it again). However I like the Yamaha FS850 even more. Yamaha must have done something new with the top because it does not sound as muted as the Sigma. It is definitely not the typical mahogany guitar. It is somewhere between the typical mahogany and a spruce top guitar. It sounds like it has much of the range of a spruce guitar but with all the high frequencies slightly rounded down. It just sounds relaxed and mellow. Its top reverberates with the strings far more than the Sigma did and it has far more bass that is still very cleanStrummed it sounds cleaner and less jangly than a spruce top guitar. It sounds like it has a reduced frequency range and accentuates the primary notes so in many ways when strummed hard it sounds and would record cleaner. The neck is really nice and comfortable and for someone used to playing electrics it is quite small and flat and very close to the Modern C shape of a Strat. The neck is low gloss and not sticky at all. The body has a gloss coating over it and nice abalone around the sound hole and a lighter coloured mahogany for the binding. So it looks a bit blingy but not to over the top. The sound hole is also quite large which might be what gives it the open sound.Anyway I love the guitar and would recommend anyone try it out when you next go guitar shopping.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great guitar. Abysmal packing at factory/warehouse.

Guitar 1. Amazon 0. Second bad experience with musical instrument packaging from Amazon.

The Yamaha FS850 is a beautiful looking, playing and sounding guitar, so the reviews online were right, and I’m glad I have one. Yamaha seems like an underrated guitar brand. It’s fit and finish is surprisingly great for a cheap guitar. It played virtually setup out of the totally shredded box. This guitar is quiet but has a focused resonance that records very well. It has a folky woody sound that’s not overly bright. Love that.

    Amazon and Yamaha bad packaging:

WARNING!!!!! It’s not the guitar’s fault- but this is for Amazon- the box the guitar came in looked like it was run over by a folk lift. Or ripped by a Tyrannosaurus rex. It was torn and retaped in several places. I don’t know if it was returned or the box alone was damaged. It did not happen in transit as the outer box had no damage…. So Amazon packed it this way. And…No fragile markings. No paper or foam. Ridiculous. Amazon- do better. Wtf? Amazon seems to not care about musical instruments. I purchased here as I had Amazon gift cards. Also- Yamaha… wtf? This is the box you used to pack the guitar? No reinforcement or foam? Do better Yamaha.

Miraculously the guitar itself doesn’t appear to be damaged, but perhaps deep micro cracks could have happened which could later shorten its life. Will evaluate during the return grace period. Hopefully not as I love this instrument. My advice is to consider carefully before buying fragile instruments from Amazon. Guitar seems very durable given this wrecked box.
