Best use as a mic that captures the ambiance of instruments, rather than close-up VO
    5 Stars
Best use as a mic that captures the ambiance of instruments, rather than close-up VO
Realize that this mic is renowned as a stellar performer for instruments, mandolin, piano, drum overheads, etc. The 3-position roll-off switch allows for a lot of versatility in what you can do. I record character voices for apps and games, and bought it to use for home demos (the studios I work with then use Neumann U87's if they pick me), voice-over, and teaching via Zoom. Here are my thoughts: As a male with a medium voice, I find this mic might work for VO only if you have a VERY well-treated room of medium to larger size. Because this mike is more of an open cardioid sound, If I sit back from it a bit, I suddenly find too much room ambiance in my voiceover or Zoom lesson because this mic reveals too much of the limitations of my small recording area. If you are planning to use this for narration or VO work, you should stay close, and have a pretty decent amount of studio-like room treatment -- as well as a good-sized room. This mic does require it, or you won't be as happy with the results on VO. In my opinion, there are better choices for a VO mic, simply because the KSM32 allows too much ambiance (which becomes room echo in a small home studio). I suspect this mic works so well on instruments precisely because it does capture a bit more around it in an airy sort of way. Ira Glass from NPR uses this mic, by the way. I bought my KSM32 used for half off, played with it, and am selling it. My only regret is not having enough money for the KSM42, which is so gorgeous on voice, it's insane. That is a voice-tailored mic. The 32 seems more of an instrument or, according to reports, a good drum overhead mic. I have not tried the more expensive KSM42 in a smaller room such as my own, but I have learned that the KSM32 is not meant for my recording environment.
