Ariana Grande’s SNL Singer Impressions Vs. Original Artists

Ariana Grande has had a long career, being raised and promoted as another Disney darling (that never ends well, there’s some real creepy stuff going on over there behind the scenes).

I don’t know if they pick these kids based on talent or groom them for it (or grow them in a lab), but they did a great job with Ariana, especially in the music department.

Everyone’s been saying that she’s the next Mariah Carey and I agree, if only she’d get away from some of this filthy pop music and make a classy Christmas album or something.

Ariana Grande the Musical Impressionist

She’s got the looks, the voice (her vocal gymnastics rival that of Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera), the acting chops, but beyond all of that she’s pretty funny. She was, after all, the co-star of one of Nickelodeon’s recent successful comedy shows, Sam & Cat.

What most of us didn’t know what she’s one of the best musical impressionists out there right now.

Oh no, we lost the Shakira stream! Chloe, can you handle it?

Recently Ariana Grande was on Saturday Night Live. She might have hosted it, I’m not sure, but she was in several skits, including one where she did a list of impressions during a mock data outage at the streaming service Tidal.

Those impressions included some of the most influential female vocalists of the past four decades, listed below:

  • Whitney Houston
  • Britney Spears
  • Rihanna
  • Shakira
  • Celine Dion

Check out the video with the comparisons right here, in the order of the list above. The video with the comparisons was actually taken down but I have an officially sanctioned version of the clip directly from SNL for you:

I’m glad someone finally called out Rihanna for her mumbling. I know it’s supposed to be cool right now but people are going to look back on that nonsense in the same way we will this over usage of auto-tune. We’re literally in the dark ages of pop music.

Ariana Grande: A Voice in the Darkness of Pop Music

If you want to hear how bad it’s really getting, listen to any pop country song. They sound like T-Pain, a bunch of literal robots.

You have to wonder if any of them can even really sing at this point, or if they’re just removing that variable out of the cookie cutter equation altogether now. If you really want to know how bad it is, listen to any of the current Trap rap topping the charts these days.

I’ve been listening to hip hop for three decades now and even I can’t understand the crap these guys are mumbling into the mic, even though they repeat it a hundred times per verse. Yes, the verses are largely them saying the same stuff over and over again now.

Thanks, Mike Jones, for that one. I’ll admit, the beats aren’t boring. Some of them are down right amazing.

That Shakira impersonation was perfect, though. That dude does a decent Jay-Z, too, who had a rightful place in the skit as the majority owner of Tidal. I like how they put Celine Dion in at the end so Ariana had a chance to show off her real skills. She’s there for marketing purposes, after all.

All in all, not bad for an MK Ultra mind control victim (I see you, Disney!).
